Scientific knowledge constitutes also a philosophy of life, according to Epicurus. The brain perceives instincts, emotions and mental functions. Instincts and emotions are about the present. Mental functions may be about the past, present or future. In a stressful situation, a negative emotion is a safe criterion of truth, but we must not let it overwhelm us, as if our lives were in danger. The calm dealing with stressful situations strengthens our self-confidence and good psychology
