Six years full of knowledge, creativity, and discoveries!
Once again this year, the remote Kastellorizo turned into a lively meeting place for scientists, researchers, educators, artists, and students, all united by a love of knowledge and the pursuit of educational and cultural experiences.
This year too, science met art, puzzles met imagination and creative thinking, technology met culture, research met education and hands-on learning.
200 students in Kastellorizo!
The participation of students was especially moving again this year.
200 students from Athens, Rhodes, Symi, and Kos, together with the children from Kastellorizo, took part in the festival activities, creating a large educational community and confirming that science and creative learning are a unique motivation for exploration!!
A special mention goes to a student from Ios, a female student from Komotini, and 4 students from Kos, who traveled to the island on their own, without being accompanied by a school group. A wonderful example of personal initiative and love for gaining new knowledge.
Because in the end, that’s also the biggest message of the Puzzle Festival: curiosity and the pursuit of knowledge can overcome any distance!
A program full of science, experiments, and creative exploration.
The program of the 6th Kastellorizo Puzzle Festival was particularly rich and multifaceted, covering a wide range of scientific, educational, and cultural topics.
From ancient Greek technology and the history of sciences to artificial intelligence, genetics, astrophysics, chemistry, physics, marine education, archaeology, and educational robotics, the participants offered different starting points for exploration and discovery.
Scientific presentations, workshops, constructions, puzzles, and hands-on activities gave students the opportunity to approach complex concepts in a fun and creative way.
Experiential learning was again a key element of the festival this year, emphasizing participation, experimentation, observation, and collaboration.
Science was not presented as a series of ready-made answers, but as an exciting process of inquiry, where every question can lead to a new discovery.
More than 60 scientists and researchers meet the public through 40 diverse events.
A key factor of the festival was the presence of scientists, academics, researchers, and educators from different fields and scientific areas. It highlighted the importance of direct communication between young people and those involved in scientific research and knowledge production. Their detailed account is complex here, but you can find out more here…
Professor Georgios P. Chrousos brought to the forefront modern medicine and raised questions about the impact of the digital revolution on the new generation.
Professor Steven Boyages gave students the opportunity to get to know the human genetic code, approaching one of the most fascinating puzzles of modern Biology.
Puzzles as a tool for learning and creative thinking
Puzzles were once again the heart of the festival this year.
Pantazis Houlis presented, with his unique passion, activities that highlighted the history, significance, and different forms of puzzles.
The wooden puzzles and constructions by Yavuz Demirhan, Michail Toulouzas, and Panagiotis Kalantzis challenged visitors to test their observation skills, patience, and inventiveness.
These activities confirmed that a puzzle is not just a problem-solving game, but a tool that cultivates critical thinking, collaboration, persistence, and creativity.
Education, schools, and creativity
This year, the participation of school groups and students from different regions of Greece was especially important, as they acted as creators, presenters, and active members of the educational process.
This continues to be one of the festival’s main goals: to give children the space to express themselves, experiment, collaborate, and turn knowledge into personal creation.
Science meets art and culture
The 6th Kastellorizo Puzzle Festival further expanded the connection between science, art, and culture.
Traditional music, art workshops, and cultural activities gave the festival a unique character, showing that science and art are not two separate worlds, but complementary expressions of human creativity.
Kastellorizo as a place to highlight knowledge and culture
The Festival continues to showcase Kastellorizo as a place where geographical distance is not an obstacle to creation, scientific communication, and educational innovation.
The unique character of the island, its history, cultural heritage, and natural environment are integral parts of the festival’s identity.
Activities focusing on nature, the sea, archaeology, and local tradition highlighted Megisti as a lively field of exploration. . Kastellorizo doesn’t just host a Festival; it is itself the source of inspiration and creation.
The first rain in the Festival’s history!
And since every festival has its own unpredictable moments, this year we had a first!
For the first time, rain made its appearance during the event. The weather may have given us this surprise, but it didn’t discourage us!
On the contrary, it became part of this year’s festival story, reminding us that when there is will and collective effort, even unpredictable conditions can be handled.
And in the end, all went well!
Six years of creativity and outreach
From its early editions until today, the Festival has managed to:
• Create a stable educational institution, shaping a unique identity in the field of science communication
• Attract academics, scientists, researchers, educators, and artists from different scientific fields
• Offer students opportunities for experiential learning and creative expression
• To strengthen the connection of the schools with the universities and research community.
• To expand its geographical boundaries beyond the island.
• To showcase Kastellorizo as a place of creation and export of educational and scientific culture.
• To prove that knowledge can be fun, that learning can be joyful, and that creative thinking knows no geographical limits.
Every year adds another piece to this journey, strengthening collaborations, outward focus, and the educational value of the institution.
The Festival is being awarded!
As recognition of their long-standing and significant contribution to the fields of Education and Culture, the President of the UNESCO Group of Piraeus and Islands, Mr. I. Maronitis, awarded the festival organizers Pantazi Houli and Eleni Grammatikopoulou on Saturday, 23/10, within the framework of the International Festival of Five Continents.
The organizers and our valuable supporters
The event was organized by Pantazis Houlis, a mathematician and founder of the Meduseum (Megisti Puzzle Museum), and the EN.I.G.MA. Association (Union of Ideas, Puzzles, Mathematics), in collaboration with Eleni Grammatikopoulou, known for her long-standing contribution in the field of science communication, both of who initiated the creation of the Kastellorizo Puzzle Festival.
The Festival was co-organized with the Region of South Aegean and was supported by the Municipalities of Megisti and Fyli. Valuable supporters included the Hellenic Parliament and a large number of government agencies that backed the festival and placed it under their auspices.
Heartfelt thanks also go to the private sponsors, who supported this big volunteer effort once again, showing their love and trust.
Similar support came from a large number of media outlets and sponsors from Greece and abroad, through announcements, interviews, mentions, and promotions.
We thank the Hellenic Red Cross, the local authorities, the teaching staff of all educational levels on the island, and our friends and volunteers for their warm support. Their contribution is invaluable.
The Kastellorizo Puzzle Festival is a huge collective effort, built on giving, collaboration, and the belief that knowledge can bring people together!
A big thank you to everyone!
